- Well I bought the Multiface III and am quite happy with it. Partly because
- of the ease with which it installed! It has added a bit to the serial
- throughput, although things were already quite good with the Picasso taking
- the strain off the DMA chips. The biggest difference was a noticeable decrease
- in packet loss/corrupted files. I frequently used to get mangled data in big
- (>150k) .lha files, but no longer.
-
- The Guru-ROM was interesting. The adverts and the manual says that
- performance increase is hard to predict, and they are right! I have two
- Quantum drives, both supposedly SCSI-II. According to SysInfo, one used to
- clock at about 200k/sec, and the other at 2Mb/sec. After installing the Guru,
- they both went up to about the same (2.5Mb/sec).
-
- Next, when I first installed my second drive, I would get "unexpected status"
- errors on the second one in the chain. After much experimentation I discovered
- that the only way to get it to work was to remove ALL terminating resistor
- packs, which is not how it is supposed to be! The downside of this was to
- extend the startup time as the SCSI controller polled all the potential
- devices before starting. Guru-ROM fixed that, I now have the terminating
- resistors in place and I have a fast (<3sec) poll before it gets going.
-
- Finally, the extended GVPSCSICTRL utility included with the Guru-ROM includes
- a switch to turn off DMA. I don't know if other versions do this but my
- previous version (which came with a GVP FaaastROM v2.0) did not. Turning DMA
- off slowed the drives down to more conventional speeds but got rid of an
- annoying problem with corrupted video on my Picasso.
-
- So the short answer is, a Guru-ROM may do very little for you, or it may make
- a significant difference.
-
- cheers
